This Week at CCE Franklin

Vanetta Conn, CHES

Family, Health & Well-Being Educator & CCE Communications Director

Cornell Cooperative Extension Franklin County

With warmer weather, our thoughts turn to gardening and preparing for the Franklin County Fair. Upcoming events include a new way to think about growing your garden, up instead of out and helping youth get ready to show their animals at the fair. Be sure to call or email if you have any questions. The proper educator to contact regarding each program is included in the program information.

There is always something happening at CCE Franklin. Here is a quick overview of the upcoming week. To learn more or register for an event visit our website at Franklin.CCE.Cornell.edu.

Vertical Gardening: Saturday May 30 from 9 to noon at Bonesteel’s Garden Center, Route 11, N. Bangor. For those with limited garden space or planning smaller, traditional or raised bed vegetable gardens, vertical gardening; growing up, instead of out, can increase yields and variety. Getting the most out of every bit of available space, even where you might never have thought it possible. Free with coffee and snacks. Visit our website at Franklin.CCE.Cornell.edu for more information and online registration or contact Richard Gast, rlg24@cornell.edu.

Horse Camp: Friday May 29 through Sunday May 31. 4-H members and their families from the Franklin County 4-H Horse Program will be participating in a 35 year spring tradition known as Horse Camp. Youth will be preparing for fair, competitive trail rides and horse shows while adding to their knowledge about their equine partners. They will be seen working their horses in the main ring, over jumps in the infield, over trail obstacles, and in the indoor arena. The weekend culminates with a special Standardbred race horse day on Sunday afternoon sponsored by the New York Agricultural and Horse Breeding Development Fund. Horse campers will be treated to a visit to the race horse barns where they will learn about racing, harnesses and equipment used, how race horses are trained and how to become a harness race driver. During the afternoon, local race horse owners and trainers will put on 2 training races. The winners of each race will be presented with a special blue blanket called a “cooler” with the embroidered logo “4H Training Race 2015”. Contact Pat Banker, pab21@cornell.edu.

Growing Stronger Program: Tuesday & Thursday afternoons from 12:45 to 2:00 at the St Regis Mohawk Tribe Office for the Aging Sunroom. Growing Stronger is a strength and balance building program for men and women ages 50+. There is no cost for attending this program. Contact Vanetta, vmc23@cornell.edu for more information.

Eat Smart NY!: Wednesday June 3, at OneWorkSource from 10:00-11:00 AM. Contact Jen Shaw, jls658@cornell.edu or visit our website for more information.

Dairy Camp: Saturday June 6 beginning at 8:30 AM through Sunday June 7 at 2:00 PM. Each year this 4-H Clinic aims to provide 4-H Youth with engaging opportunities to improve and develop their “Show-Savvy” techniques. The youth will receive instructions on what to do with their calves at home before they come to the show; how to wash and clip their project animals; what to do with the care of their animal upon the arrival to a fair and during the exhibition. Contact Diane DuMont, drd9@cornell.edu for more information.

Be sure to plan to spend June 14 or 21, eating ice cream Sundaes on the Farm. All ages will enjoy seeing a bird’s eye view of functional farms in full operation. This wonderful educational opportunity highlights the region’s largest contributor of our local economy. Farmers in general are notorious for putting revenue back into their surrounding communities. Each Sunday tours start around noon and the last one finishes about 3 PM. Thanks to PAPAS Dairy for opening their farm on June 14 and Tierney Farm Jerseys on June 21. Contact Steve McDonald, smm384@cornell.edu.

Register now for the 2015 Maple Tour, June 28—30. The tour will feature visits to a variety of maple operations, both larger and smaller. Online registration and payment is available at Franklin.CCE.Cornell.edu.
