Dairy Camp 2015

With the help of many volunteers, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Franklin County in northern NY organizes a two day 4-H dairy camp to 40-50 youth annually. The region has a long history with regards to the dairy industry. Although the number of dairy farms have declined, milk production has risen as remaining farm sizes have grown and farmers and their cows have become more efficient thanks to scientific research from institutions like Cornell University and Miner Institute. The ability to lease animals have allowed non-dairy youth the opportunity to attend dairy camp and experience the show ring which otherwise, would not be possible.

Participants start on Saturday morning by moving in their animals and/or getting acquainted with their leased animal. Youth are given an orientation, receive their class schedule, and proceed through a variety of interactive sessions including; tying slip knots, bovine nomenclature, show ring apparel, safety, and more. Youth are then divided into “learning groups” based on age and experience and rotate through stations led by experienced volunteers including 4-H alumni. Specialty hands-on stations include; washing, clipping and fitting, hoof care and trimming, feeding for show, and showmanship 101- “what you need to know”. Instructors share their knowledge and skills based on the experience of the group.

After a busy day learning, youth enjoy an evening meal and some down time building friendships, sharing experiences, leading their animals, or catching up on unfinished clipping. As the night comes to an end, youth are welcomed to camp out in the 4-H Youth Building with their parents or go home.

Sunday morning brings show day. Exhibitors are up early washing animals and putting on the finishing touches before going into the ring. Youth enter the show ring with their respective class and participate in a mock showmanship class. The judge is instructed to facilitate the show as he/she ordinarily would taking time to educate our future showmen and women along the way. Our young exhibitors soak up all the tips the judge provides and eagerly look forward to the show season when they get to enter the show ring again with all their newfound knowledge.
