Cornell Cooperative Extension is interested in connecting with existing and future local hops growers!
In an effort to capitalize on the expected need for more NY grown hops, CCE Franklin County wants to connect with existing hops growers and those interested in pursuing establishment and production of this crop. Join us at our kick off of a series of grower workshops with a “Get to know one another in the hops world” event.
In the 1880s, New York State was the country’s No. 1 producer of hops. A mildew epidemic and Prohibition devastated the industry. Growers in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho ramped up production to fill the void and now account for 98 percent of the country’s crop. It is pretty apparent that in days gone by, Franklin County figured heavily in the growing of hops for the brewery market. Locals tell of the many acres of hops grown here and of hops poles still in storage, ready for the next wave of interest.
Well, it appears the “next wave of interest” is upon us. Locally, new hop yards have begun in the last few years; others are being planned and started. Sparking the boom is a 2012 New York State law that allows craft breweries to sell beer by the glass on their premises, provided that 20 percent of the ingredients come from the state. The proportion is set to rise to 60 percent in 2019 and 90 percent in 2024!
Since 2010 the Empire State’s hop acreage has jumped to 250 from just 15, according to Steve Miller of the Cornell University Cooperative Extension. New York now boasts 105 microbreweries, up from 40 in 2011, and 66 licensed farm breweries.
