Day camp is a partnership between Cornell Cooperative Extension of Franklin County & the Greater Malone YMCA. All children ages 5-12 years of age are welcome to participate in a variety of fun summer activities.


Camp Akalaka Classes

  • Daily Swimming @ FA pool
  • Weekly Field Trips
  • Recreation And Sports Play (RASP) - Every day campers will learn brand new games and play classics like soccer, volleyball, or Capture the Flag. The goal of this class is to have fun, learn the fundamentals of several different sports, and enhance gross motor skills.
  • Geocaching - Campers will learn fundamentals of Geospatial Information Systems while using GPS tools to search for hidden treasures! Campers will then have the opportunity to create a treasure map and see a Drone in action!
  • Drama / Dance / Yoga - Campers will learn exciting dance genres and routines such as, hip hop, square dancing, line dancing and Zumba! Camper wills also have to opportunity to have fun with friends while developing a sense of stage presence and learning some improvisation acting skills. Campers will even get to learn relaxing yoga techniques and poses!
  • Arts and Crafts - This camp favorite incorporates a wide variety of art forms including textiles, painting, sculpture, miniatures, crafts from recycled materials and much more! This class allows campers to take home several hand made camp memories.
  • Wilderness Education - Campers will learn basic survival skills to help prepare for any adventure in the back country. Some skills include how to make shelters, build fires, set up a camp, find your way in the woods, identify safe and unsafe plants. This class will also include small hikes up the near by Pinnacle Mountain Trails.
  • Woodworking - Campers will learn the fundamentals of woodworking using primitive tools. Campers will then fashion their own wood bluebird or bat house. Campers will learn a life skill, and bring home a beautiful piece of work to share with nature!
  • Clowning 101 - Campers will enjoy learning about the FUNdamentals of clowning! Campers will get to make balloon animals, learn magic tricks, and develop their own “clown persona” with costumes and face paint.
  • Archery - Campers learn the parts of the bow and arrow, archery safety, and practice to develop shooting skills.
  • Cooking - Each day campers will learn new cooking techniques and skills while focusing on the importance of well-balanced, healthy, and kid-friendly, food choices. By the end of the week campers will have planned, prepared and enjoyed snacks, some desserts and foods from breakfast and lunch.
  • Fishing and Tracking - Campers will learn common sportfish identification, knot tying, casting basics, fishing safety and regulations. Campers will then get to try these new skills out at the Village Pond and if their luck is good, catch a fish! Poles and equipment provided. Campers will also have the opportunity to find and identify local Adirondack animal tracks and scat. Additionally campers will have the opportunity to dissect owl pellets to discover prey remnants!

Camp Akalaka will be held at The Malone Ice Arena, 64 State Street, Malone

Monday thru Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm

Camp Akalaka Fees:

$110 per week / one child

$170 per week / two siblings

$230 per week / three siblings

Camp Akalaka is a certified day camp registered with NYS Department of Health

Camp Akalaka water safety instructor, Tayler Mallark, teaches campers water safety and rescue techniques during daily swim lessons. Registration for 2016 Day Camp season open now.
